Overview
- Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center
During the German occupation of Kyiv (1941–1943), Babyn Yar became one of the largest killing sites of the “Holocaust by bullets.” Almost the entire Jewish community of Kyiv was murdered here, along with Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and Ukrainian civilians. Under Soviet rule, the ravine was filled and reshaped, and the Jewish dimension of the tragedy suppressed for decades.
Today the territory is cared for by the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, which created and maintains its memorial objects: the Mirror Field, the Place for Reflection synagogue, the Crystal Wall of Crying, and A Glance into the Past, installed at the exact points where the 1941 photographs were taken. Despite the ongoing war, the site remains open for guided tours, educational programs, and commemorative ceremonies.
