Overview
- Warsaw Ghetto Museum
Founded in 1878, the Bersohn and Bauman Jewish Children’s Hospital became one of the Warsaw Ghetto’s main medical facilities after the ghetto was sealed in November 1940. Despite extreme overcrowding, starvation, epidemics, and severe shortages of medicines, its staff cared for children suffering from typhus, tuberculosis, and hunger-related illnesses. In 1942, hospital physicians secretly participated in pioneering research on starvation, documenting the effects of deliberate hunger imposed on the ghetto population. The findings survived the war and were published in 1946 as Starvation Disease, a landmark scientific and historical record. Following a comprehensive restoration, the historic complex is scheduled to open to the public in autumn 2027 as the Warsaw Ghetto Museum.
