Overview
- The Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (The MAZSIHISZ)
The garden next to the Dohány Street Synagogue is a deeply symbolic site in Hungarian Jewish history. Originally acquired around the turn of the 20th century, the site was developed after WWI with a cultural center, the Heroes Synagogue honoring fallen soldiers, and a park surrounded by open arcades.
During WWII, the complex became part of the overcrowded Budapest ghetto. Following liberation, the remains of thousands who perished from starvation, cold, siege, and Arrow Cross violence were discovered in the streets. Over 2,000 victims were buried in the garden, transforming the planned park into a mass grave and a solemn memorial to the horrors of the Holocaust.
