Overview

The Falstad Centre

SS Strafgefangenenlager Falstad was a detention and transit camp where approximately 4,200 people were imprisoned until liberation in May 1945. Primarily a camp for political prisoners, Falstad also became a key transit point for Jewish prisoners before their deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau. From December 1941 to November 1942, a total of 48 Jews – primarily from Trondheim's Jewish community of about 260 individuals – were held at Falstad. Eight Jewish men were executed in the Falstad forest. In Winter 1942/43, the remaining Jewish Falstad prisoners were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Most were immediately murdered in the gas chambers upon arrival. Only four of the Jewish prisoners of Falstad survived both camps. Falstad has been a memorial site since 1945.
