Overview
- State Museum at Majdanek (branch)
The German Nazi extermination camp SS-Sonderkommando Sobibor was established in the General Government as part of operation “Reinhardt”. Around 180,000 victims were deported there and murdered in the gas chambers in 1942–1943. They were mostly Polish, Dutch, Slovak, Austrian, German, and French Jews. On 14 October 1943, a prisoner uprising broke out in the camp. The insurgents stormed the barbed wire fences and escaped. Then, the camp was shut down and systematically destroyed. The Museum and Memorial in Sobibór is a branch of the State Museum at Majdanek. It protects the mass graves area and the remnants of the camp infrastructure. Through research, exhibitions, and education, it documents and promotes the history of the camp, and strives to restore the identities of the victims.
