Overview

Gilleleje Museum

Gilleleje Museum is located at the heart of one of the most significant sites in the rescue of Danish Jews during the Holocaust. Following the German order to arrest Danish Jews in October 1943, approximately 1,500 refugees escaped from Gilleleje and the north coast of Zealand to Sweden with the help of local families, fishermen, and resistance members. The museum stands where many of these events unfolded and uses authentic locations, personal testimonies, and rare artifacts—including a boat used in rescue operations—to explore themes of flight, solidarity, moral courage, and human choice. Rooted in a local story, the museum connects visitors to broader Holocaust history and enduring questions about persecution, responsibility, and refuge.
