Overview
- Memorial center Staro sajmište
The Staro Sajmište site is directly connected to the Holocaust in the Balkans and the persecution and genocide of Serbs and Roma in occupied Serbia. In 1941, the Jewish Camp Zemun was established there, where about 6,400 Jews and many Roma were interned. Between March and May 1942, around 6,320 remaining Jewish prisoners were murdered in a gas van, marking one of the earliest stages of the Final Solution in the Balkans. In May 1942, the site became the Detention Camp Zemun for resistance members and Serbian civilians, functioning until July 1944 as a main detention and transit camp in Southeastern Europe. Of 31,972 prisoners, around 10,636 died there or after deportation.
