Overview

Palanga Jewish Community

On 27 June 1941, Nazi forces and their local collaborators murdered 106 Jews and 5 Lithuanians in the woodland near Birutė Park. In 1958, the victims’ remains were reburied in the municipal cemetery of Palanga. A memorial stone erected in 1989 remains as a historical witness to the way the Holocaust was commemorated during that period. Nearby, a new memorial marks the area where the massacre took place and commemorates all currently identified victims by name. Together, these memorials preserve both the memory of the victims and the history of Holocaust remembrance in Palanga.
