Overview

The Camp des Milles Foundation – Memory and Education

The Camp des Milles is the only preserved French internment and deportation camp. Between 1939 and 1942, under the Third Republic and under the Vichy regime, it successively interned, among others, refugees fleeing Nazism and later foreigners. It ultimately became a deportation camp, from which more than 2,000 Jewish men, women, and children were deported to Auschwitz. Today, the Memorial Site is also a museum welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually. Through its UNESCO Chair in Citizenship Education, Human Sciences and Convergence of Memories, it draws on interdisciplinary research to transmit the universal lessons of the Shoah and strengthen civic engagement against racism, antisemitism, and all forms of discrimination.
