Overview
- The Jewish Community of Rome
Largo 16 Ottobre 1943, at the heart of Rome’s ancient Jewish community, is named in memory of the deportation of Rome’s Jews during the Holocaust. On 16 October 1943, German soldiers, using lists and addresses gathered in advance, rounded up 1,022 Jewish men, women, and children and deported them to Auschwitz. Hundreds were gathered in this area before being led away. Only sixteen survived: one woman and fifteen men.
