Overview
- Žanis Lipke Memorial
This Holocaust site is connected to the story of Žanis Lipke, a Latvian dockworker and bootlegger who rescued more than 50 Jews from the Nazis. Lipke and his family helped them escape from the ghetto and forced-labor camps. On Ķīpsala island in Riga, in the yard at the end of Mazais Balasta Dambis, the tiny street where the Lipke family lived, they dug out an underground bunker to hide those they had rescued. The site today is marked by a memorial standing next to the family house. In 1966, Žanis and his wife Johana were recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.
