Activities

European Sites of Holocaust Memory (ESHEM) is a network dedicated to safeguarding the historical sites of the Holocaust and strengthening their role in research, education, and commemoration. 

Our key focus activities

Officially launched in January 2026, ESHEM initially focused on opening the call for membership and inviting eligible Holocaust sites across Europe to apply to join the network.

Now that the first members have joined the network, ESHEM will begin rolling out a program of activities designed to strengthen connections between sites, support knowledge exchange, and promote good practices in Holocaust remembrance. These will include the ESHEM members' first conference in November, capacity-building workshops, and other opportunities for collaboration.

Information about members’ events and initiatives will be shared here. In the meantime, you can sign up for our quarterly newsletter, “Imprints”. The first issue was published in March 2026, the second in June, and the next one is coming up in September.

    ESHEM Network to formally welcome its first members this November

    On 17 November 2026, the European Sites of Holocaust Memory (ESHEM) network will formally welcome its first members at a ceremony in Brussels, marking the start of the network’s new phase.

    During the ceremony, the new members will receive specially designed ESHEM markers symbolising the plaques, created by SENNA Architecture Collective, which will later be installed at the sites.

    On 18 November, representatives of the member sites will take part in a day of workshops and discussions. The closed working programme will provide an opportunity to meet, exchange experiences and begin shaping how they will communicate and work together as a network.

    A Shared Commitment to Holocaust Remembrance

    Starting ESHEM’s Mission with a Joint Campaign

    As an initiative implemented as part of the EU Strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life (2021-2030), ESHEM contributes to countering denial, distortion, and inversion of the Holocaust through mobilising the power of Holocaust sites to bear witness and unlocking their potential to strengthen historical understanding, foster civic responsibility, and sustain meaningful remembrance. 

    We are grateful for the opportunity to join our voice with those of well-established partner organizations in the joint campaign led by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and EHRI – the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure, on the occasion of 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Addressing antisemitism, hatred, and Holocaust denial is a shared responsibility, and we are honored to contribute to this important effort.

    Building Partnerships for the Future

    This campaign marks ESHEM’s first public activity and, we hope, the beginning of fruitful cooperation and lasting partnerships. Such alliances are essential to safeguarding Holocaust remembrance and confronting antisemitism in the contemporary world, ensuring that the lessons of history continue to inform and strengthen our societies today.
